When is the last time you watched mercy and compassion in action and just burst into tears? Last Sunday, July 2nd my 15 year old son, Joab, arrived in the Dominican Republic with 300 young people recruited from the public school system all across Canada. These young people made the quantum leap from safe, clean, prosperous Canada to absolute poverty in D.R. – filth, starvation, stench, lack.
Why would they choose to give up part of their summer vacation to serve food in a garbage dump, toil in the heat with a pick and shovel to build someone else a home, play with dirty, emaciated children? Because they’re HEROES!
Since their arrival on Sunday our student HEROES have:
- Been working to build a community centre/school/medical clinic in a very impoverished area that has no school or medical care.
- Delivered hot meals to the garbage dump, where refugees from Haiti survive by sorting through the trash for edible food, and recyclable goods.
- Visited an orphanage of special needs children who were discarded and abandoned.
- Assisted with medical clinics – over 140 people were treated on the first day of the clinic!
- Torn down a shack in order to build a home for one of the residents.
These amazing young people raised all their own expenses, and are providing the labour. Be A HERO has been working with Vaden and Crystal Earle and Absolute Leadership Development to raise the funds for the materials. The community centre/school/medical clinic has been started – WE WANT TO SEE IT FINISHED!

Here’s what Heather had to say about her experience in Dominican Republic last year,
“Actually being there, seeing the people and holding the little kids has had a HUGE impact on my life. The people there have nothing, but they are so happy. I can remember in Redemption Village, the little kids were so excited about getting suckers and stickers, to them it meant the world. When I was handing out suckers I had a little girl named Angela in my arms. When she saw that I had given all of mine away, even though she only had one, she offered it to me. That was a changing moment in my life. The fact that she was willing to give up the little that she had to make someone else happy brought me to tears. To think that in Canada the little four year old would have eaten the sucker without even thinking about giving it to someone else, when we have everything we need and more, but the little girl who had nothing would give me hers. I guess I’m a totally new person. I want to be able to dance and sing and praise God for what I have, not complain about what I don't have. This is a project I hope to do every year from now on!!”
Wow! Life-altering for the participants, permanent blessings for the recipients – that’s what Hero Holidays are all about!
Be A Hero needs your help. The immediate goal is an additional $15,000.00 in building materials in order to

finish the medical clinic and school. This is a project that will help the poorest of the poor to have access to the most basic essentials that we all take for granted. Imagine for a moment your home town without a school or a medical clinic…..and no hope of ever having one.
These children will now have medical care, and a school in their own community
Call us today to make a donation for this project - $100.00, $500.00, $1000.00 As I said, we are looking for $15,000.00 to enable these students to try to complete the project while they are there, although a small team will remain on site after the Hero Holiday to finish any residual work that needs doing.
How can you help? Send us an email today (with your phone number) to admin@beahero.org saying YES! I want to help the poor of the Dominican Republic! and we will call you for your credit card number. Or you can mail a cheque (with a note designating it to Dominican Republic) to:
